 (Madison, WI – February 2009)

Capital K9’s is proud to help introduce the newest K9 Team to become a member of the Madison Police Department’s (MPD) Canine Unit.  Please join us Tuesday, February 17 at 10:30am; Room 260 of the Madison Municipal Building.  Madison Police Officer Rose Douglas and her K9 Partner Martie will be making their public debut after months of intensive training.  “We are fortunate to have Animart as the sponsor of the newest K9 Team,” says Dan McIlroy, President, Capital K9’s.  “As the need for K9 teams in the Madison Police Department has grown, so has Capital K9s and Animart has been one of the leading supporters every step of the way.”

Historically, the cost of creating a patrol K9 unit has been the greatest obstacle to the formation of a unit on the Madison Police Department.  A group of officers recognized the need for greater K9 capabilities on the department, and began exploring creative ways to fund the creation of such a program.  In 2004, Capital K9’s was formed by a group of volunteer members for the express purpose of funding a Madison Police Department patrol K9 unit.  Since then, Capital K9’s has provided funding for five patrol K9 teams.

The MPD’s K9 teams have provided a great service to the community, tracking missing persons, apprehending suspects and locating evidence.  The K9 teams have also made many public appearances, visits to schools and attended community events, resulting in numerous positive police/citizen encounters.

All of the funding for operating the patrol K9 unit – except for officers’ salaries – is provided by Capital K9’s.  These costs include vehicles, training, food, equipment, veterinary expenses, and the dogs themselves.
